Biography

In 2016 Gareth survived an acute Aortic Dissection and underwent extensive cardiothoracic surgery at Barts Heart Centre and vascular surgery at the Royal London Hospital. Since discovering that many Aortic Dissection patients are not so fortunate, he has found a new purpose leading the charity’s work of supporting affected patients and families, raising awareness of Aortic Dissection, partnering in research, and driving change in the healthcare system. Gareth is a passionate advocate for ending healthcare inequalities and improving diagnosis, care and outcomes for Aortic Dissection patients across the UK & Ireland. He serves as Patient & Public Voice Partner on the NHS England Vascular Clinical Reference Group. Gareth initially studied Applied Physics at the University of Central Lancashire and spent a year as an NHS Medical Physicist before moving into the private sector. Prior to his Aortic Dissection, he enjoyed a successful career in clinical IT leadership roles at international healthcare companies including Hewlett-Packard, Roche and GSK. He is a recipient of the Institute of Physics’ John Bargery Prize and holds an MSc with Distinction from the University of Oxford.
