Biography

Dr Samir Redzepagic was born in Montenegro, had initial early education in Germany and Bosnia, while completed later high school in New York, US. Entered Sarajevo University Medical School and obtained MD in Bosnia, after which he commenced general and cardiothoracic residency in Berlin, Germany at the prestigious German Heart Institute Berlin under Prof Roland Hetzer, further training in heart and lung transplant with Cardiothoracic Department in Hannover University Medical Centre with Prof Borst, after which obtained German Board Certification (Facharzt in Herzchirurgie) in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1997 and became one of the youngest board certified heart surgeons in Germany at the age of 31. Short overseas fellowship and training at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. PhD completion in basic medical sciences with a topic “The role of omega 3 fatty acids on transplanted cardiomyocytes in mice models”. Continued to work as consulting cardiac surgeon at German Heart Institute Berlin until 2000 when upon invitation joined Cardiothoracic and Transplant Department of The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia as a transplant fellow and consulting cardiothoracic surgeon. Academic and clinical appointments with Melbourne University, Victoria University and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Since early 2020 joined Department of Health Victoria in public health advisory role in relation to Covid-19 pandemic response. Official public health mentoring role appointments for state health departments in 3 Australian states. Clinical Experience and Special Interests: While still in Berlin, Germany in the late 1990’s started performing minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures, off pump total arterial coronary revascularization and robotic procedures using the original Da Vinci system. With over 300 cardiac and 120 lung transplants, over 7000 on pump adult and pediatric heart procedures, over 500 off pump surgeries for coronary heart disease, 350 surgical corrections for heart arrhythmias (AF surgery) using minimally invasive or standard approach, full scope of complex congenital cardiac procedures including heart transplant. Performed over 400 aortic surgical procedures including full aortic arch replacement, Bentall procedures, David procedures, hybrid-endoscopic and full range of thoracic surgeries for lung cancer and other conditions.
